-
PRE-EVENT MEETING: A mandatory
participant meeting will be held at 8:00 a.m. at the Bayshore City
Park Pavilion. Participants must have been checked in prior to
this meeting to participate.
-
ON-SHORE START AND FINISH AREA: Before
and after the event, participants may leave their kayaks along the
shoreline while waiting for the event start or while parking their
vehicles. Paddlers should be in their kayak, in the water 10
minutes prior to the event start.
-
ON-WATER STARTING LINE: The
start/finish line will be marked between two buoys. They will be
set wide enough apart to accommodate several kayakers. The mass
start of this event may cause turbulence and possible collisions.
Participants should line-up with their experience and kayaking
skills in mind with more experience kayakers toward the front.
SAFETY RULES:
-
PFD: A U.S. Coast Guard approved
personal flotation device must be worn at all times while aboard
your kayak.
-
WEATHER: If on-shore winds exceed 20
miles per hour and wave heights exceed 3 feet, an alternate course
will be provided. If inclement weather conditions do not allow a
safe event to take place it may be postponed until Sunday, August
1, 2010. If the event cannot take place either day due to
inclement weather conditions refunds of entry fees will be
provided. If lightning conditions exist the event will be
postponed or cancelled.
-
COOPERATION:
With the cold water and rocky shoreline in many areas, number one
priority is your safety as well that of the support fleet. Should
weather conditions turn inclement and/or a capsizing occur,
Kayakers are expected to respond as directed by the support fleet.
This is avoided whenever possible but may include leaving your
kayak. Lack of cooperation puts more than you as a Kayaker at
risk. Any participant who does NOT cooperate does so at their own
risk and will be disqualified from the event.
-
BULKHEADS: A stern bulkhead with
sealed hatches or flotation bags are required for every kayak
-
OTHER REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Bilge
Pump, Spare Paddle, Paddle Float and Spray Skirt are required by
all participants. All paddlers should begin a self rescue until
help arrives if a capsize should occur.
-
INSPECTION: An inspection of your
kayak and safety equipment will be performed prior to the event
start.
-
CLOTHING: Kayakers will be expected to
wear paddling gear that adequately reduces heat loss if a
capsizing should occur. Average water temperature is 50 degrees F
with hypothermia a high risk. Dress appropriately.
-
FOOD AND BEVERAGES:
Kayakers will be expected to carry appropriate food and beverages
for the time required to complete the event.
-
SUPPORT FLEET ASSISTANCE:
Kayakers may obtain assistance from support fleet vessels without
disqualification. These mobile vessels will be marked with Orange
Flags along with Blue Flags on the anchored Turn Boats.
-
LANDING:
Kayakers are expected to "hug' the shoreline while paddling and
may go ashore at any time without disqualification. If rough water
conditions exist kayakers are required to stay at a minimum of 300
feet from the shoreline to allow access by the support fleet
should an incident occur.
-
TIME WINDOW:
The event courses will be closed no later than 5:00 p.m.. Any
participants still on the water may be directed to board a support
fleet vessel. By advising a support fleet vessel you may opt to
continue as a kayaker NOT participating in the event at that time.
AWARDS:
-
LOCATION: Bayshore Marina / City Park Pavilion
-
TIME: At the close of the kayaking
part of event.
